STMicroelectronics NV, the largest European semiconductor contract manufacturing and design company, and BorgWarner, an American automotive supplier, have joined forces to integrate SiC technology into BorgWarner’s VIPER power modules. This integration aims to support Volvo Cars‘ transition to full vehicle electrification by 2030, a decision that the company announced back in 2021.STMicroelectronics will provide SiC Power MOSFETs for BorgWarner’s VIPER power modules, which will be used in Volvo Cars’ electric vehicles. BorgWarner plans to incorporate SiC chips into its traction inverter platforms for various Volvo electric vehicle models.

The incorporation of STMicroelectronics’ SiC technology into BorgWarner’s VIPER power modules is projected to provide substantial benefits in terms of performance, efficiency, and overall electrification efforts.

The SiC Power MOSFETs are recognized for their ability to handle higher voltages and temperatures while maintaining superior energy efficiency, making them an ideal fit for the demanding requirements of electric vehicles.

Volvo Cars has set an ambitious goal to achieve full vehicle electrification by 2030, and this partnership between STMicroelectronics and BorgWarner contributes to that objective. BorgWarner’s decision to use SiC chips in its traction inverter platforms aligns with its commitment to improving electric vehicle performance.
